An Emergent Campus: Loyalist College Port Hope
Loyalist College turned the former St. Mary’s Elementary School into a new post-secondary campus in Port Hope, Ontario. A 2,000-square-foot addition joins the two main existing structures, creating an accessible link while preserving a familiar local landmark.
Inside, flexible, daylit rooms support applied learning, collaboration, and student wellbeing. The former gym, now the heart of the campus, hosts food services, classes, presentations, ceremonies, and community events. Corridors double as places to sit, meet, see and be seen, and work. Opened in September 2024, the campus illustrates how adaptive reuse can give an old building a new civic life.
A new 2,000-square-foot addition connects the two buildings, creating a fully accessible link.

New entrance canopies announce the main entrance and the newly built link.
