York University, Canada’s third-largest university, faced a growing challenge: an aging inventory of 282 common pool classrooms, many dating to the 1970s. These spaces no longer supported evolving pedagogical approaches or the diverse needs of today’s students, and were increasingly misaligned with the university’s commitment to dynamic, inclusive, student-centred learning. As the most essential space type on campus, classrooms must reflect institutional values—supporting pedagogical intent through an appropriate mix of room types, along with flexibility, accessibility, and seamless integration of AV technologies.
To address this, York engaged Architecture Counsel (ACi) to lead a comprehensive classroom renewal initiative across its two campuses.
ACi’s approach began with an extensive consultation process, engaging students, faculty, and staff to better understand teaching practices, learning preferences, and operational requirements. These insights informed a forward-looking design strategy centred on flexibility, accessibility, comfort, and seamless integration of AV technologies..


The resulting Classroom Renewal Program was structured around three interconnected components: a comprehensive classroom audit, a new design standard, and a long-term renewal plan. Together, these were consolidated into a three-volume framework to guide both strategic planning and implementation.
Building on this foundation, York re-engaged ACi to design and deliver a multi-phase renewal of 32 classrooms. Phase 1, completed in 2025, introduced eight reimagined teaching spaces—including tiered and flat-floor classrooms, as well as a fixed-seat lecture hall. Developed in close collaboration with engineering teams, these environments integrate technology and pedagogy to support a wide range of teaching and learning styles.
